I have to echo Kathy that Doomsday Book is an excellent book. It's followup came out much later and it seems to have been intended as a stand alone in the first place. Definitely recommend it.

My frustration with A Discovery of Witches was not that it was the start of a series, but rather that it is impossible to read as a stand alone. So many series books are able to be read without continuing. This was not.

The Doomsday Book is one of my sister's all-time favorites. I read it, but it was entirely too depressing for me.

Loved The Doomsday book, and am planning on reading it again.
