I still think a couple of items don't make sense even given this is the first in a series. Why did Mathew go to all the trouble to plant the note and book in Sarah's home when they could simply come back from the past minutes after they left. I guess the rules of time travel vary from author to author. But would there be two Mathews back in 1590?
Most likely would be two. As he wouldn't really be replacing himself. And so the present version will have to be careful of changing the past for the one there. And as for the note, I think he put it where he did so that they could find it again after they got back and so the other witches and creatures wouldn't find it.
iI ddodondon'don't kknknoknow iI sort of got the impression that he would be absorbed if you want into his previous body and that she would be in someone else's. Just from the descriptions of how her dad did it. Maybe I got totally confused, but thats the impression I got.
Em and Sarah state that Stephen said time travel is like changing trains. You get off one and wait until there's room for you on another one. Therefore, the past makes room for you when you go back, and you replace the former you for the time period you are there, just as Matthew and Diana did when timewalking back to Sept-Tours.
Also, I believe he left the note for Sarah as they don't yet know when the best time to come back to the present/future might be. Also, timewalking to the future is more difficult and Diana is a beginner, so she may not be able to control the return as precisely, especially when you don't use items to guide you.
