I agree that Alastair Sim was, perhaps, the best Scrooge we will ever see. And when I saw the topic, my first thought for a living actor was Michael Gambon. I didn't like George C. Scott -- not that he isn't a wonderful actor -- because his Scrooge enjoyed life a little too much. I felt that this was a complete misreading of the character.
I tried to watch the George C. Scott version recently but all I could see was Patton playing Scrooge! Hmmm, Gen. Patton might have made a good Scrooge! A few years ago I saw Charles Dickens great, great, grandson (may have missed a "great") do a one-man show of A Christmas Carol. He played all the parts w/ a simple switch of a hat, scarf, voice, etc. It was seamless and he was fabulous! Obviously, inherited the talent gene.
The one-man show sounds fabulous. I wish I could have seen it.
(It's hard for me to see George C. Scott without just seeing George C. Scott.)
Unfortunately, I can't think of a script that hasn't. A pity, because the parts they change have always been handled perfectly well by other productions, proving that it can be done. It would be hard to improve on Dickens, in this story particularly.
