I disagree, I felt the story would have been more meaningful had Katniss died in some sort of bold, symbolic way. Many people say that Prim's death is the reason Katniss found out about Coin's evil side, but I think Katniss knew deep down all along that Coin wasn't to be trusted. If Katniss had died then it would have fulfilled Her full duty and sacrifice to Her sister and towards the people. Besides that Katniss's death would have had shock value and probably would have hit most fans hard. I understand that the book was written from Her point of view, but author's have killed their main character before, although it is rare.
But isn't it much harsher for her to live without the person she wanted to protect most?
