This was going to be my question. I don't like the casting at all! Stephanie is a brunette to me and I picture someone like Angie Harmon. Joe is supposed to be a hot Italian cop. Ranger is okay but I hope they give him longer hair....
I envision Vin Diesel playing the Ranger role in the movies
I picture The Rock to play the Ranger role.
Ranger is Hispanic. Vin Diesel and the Rock are not.
Just my two cents, but I love love love the casting!
Even before there was a movie, my sister and I thought about a "cast". I always saw Jamie Lynn Sigler as Stephanie.
I wonder if Janet had any say in the selection process. I was a little disappointed in the selection of Ranger.
The only one that fit was Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Mazur
I can get on board with most of the cast, but I don't like Sherri Shepherd as Lula... She's too small for one and not as brassy and "out there" as Lula.
I am not impressed with the casting - I guess to further the question.... How much of a role, if any, did JE have in the casting. Did she envision other actors for any of the chartacters. Did anyone turn them down etc.

Both The Rock and Vin Diesel have played characters that were not black. Their multi-racial features allow for that. I won't see the movie. That is how much I dislike Katherine Heigl.
I agree that Katherine Heigl seems miscast. Stephanie has always been portrayed as dark haired, almost Italian looking.
I have to agree with Alisha and Sue .. Katherine is not a good choice and not a very good actress
I think everybody--including Janet--thought Sandra Bullock would make a great Stephanie. But her time has passed and Katie Heigl not only has the beauty, the charm and the acting and comedy chops, she has the producing clout to make this a series. Come on, people!

Katherine is 32 and Sandra is 46 years old.
I think the guy playing Morelli works. Hope they have him wear brown eyed contacts though and dye his hair a bit darker and have him tan and he can totally pull off hot Italian cop! Stephanie I think they did a good job. I think Katherine Hiegle is a very good actress and does well with silly comical roles (and looks good brunette) I think that Reynalds as grandma is brilliant, the sleazy guy for Vinny is superb, and I am holding on my reservations for Lula and Ranger. I imagined Lula much heavier and not as pretty. I am not sure ANYONE can pull off Ranger's mysterious, magnetic, suave hotness. No offense to who they cast. Hard shoes to fill.
While reading the books I always pictured Sheri Shepard as Lula, so I'm happy she was cast (I also thought about Mo'Nique in that role, but she's too old for the part, I think). I could never settle on a Stephanie, and thought I should be Connie (nevermind the fact that I'm not an actress). I'm "eh" on the guy have as Morelli, but really don't see Ranger in the guy they cast (from Grey's Anatomy). He is not nearly hot enough...but we'll see what he can do with the role. Maybe they'll all surprise us. Now, why can't I vote this question up? I want to see JE's take on it.
I absolutely HATE Katherine Heigl as Stephanie!! Might actually keep me from watching the movie.

I would never have thought of Debbie Reynolds for Grandma but I think she'll be great. I love Sherri Shepherd as Lula. And Daniel Sunjata and Jason O'Mara are hot. I'm hoping for at least partial nudity from them.
