Skye: good question. I wondered the same thing.
I always hoped OFTM would be the first in a series. Initially I was looking to Maddie and Dave from Moonlighting as role models. Ranger and Lula were simply secondary characters. When I sat down to write the second book I realized I was hooked on Lula and brought her along as Stephanie's sidekick. By book three I realized I couldn't sustain the sexual tension without structuring in a complication, and Ranger became the complication.

Ms. Evanovich, I have come to realize, you have no intention of telling Ranger's story. Nor are you going to allow Stephanie and Ranger to have a relationship. Time for you to kill off Ranger instead of just using him to sell more books. For me the series ended with book 12. It has crashed and burned. with no hope left.
