Monty J Heying Yes, I agree that the book is mostly about creed and empty values--lack of good character.

Gatsby was a dreamer, but a dream without guiding principles is merely a curse. For Gatsby it put him in the ground. If it hadn't, a prison cell was surely waiting for him around the next bend.

Gatsby's corrupt dream destroyed Daisy's reputation and almost her marriage.

Nick was so enamored with Gatsby that he could not be a true friend and help him see clearly the "high road" of a principled life. Instead, he enabled Gatsby to do the wrong thing--commit adultery and attempt to destroy a marriage. Nick said Gatsby was "alright in the end," but Nick's corrupt admiration for Gatsby clouded his judgment Gatsby wasn't "alright" by any measure because he was a crook.
