Not having read all of it I would say it is about how men would like the world to work. At least according to the author. I do not think all men feel this way but all religions try to marginalize women and there is plenty to prove that on some level they men are afraid of us. Afraid of a strong woman anyway.
I also found the book rather confusing. I would say the show does a better job of clarifying the dystopian future and offering more perspectives
