Like others, you are talking about the story and characters, rather than a trend of interest in Murakami's writing. If an author writes "The protagonist really hated the way his giant adult cock penetrated her tiny, premenstrual vagina" a couple times, I'm going to think that writer's got big adult cocks in tiny, premenstrual vaginas on the brain. Regardless of the characters, Murakami chooses to focus on characteristics that I find unsettling. The first handful of times, I shrugged it off, but halfway through the trilogy, I couldn't take it anymore.
