Heathcliff was reliable,. at least for Cathy.. he only left because she had already decided to marry Edgar... I can understand but - she chose money over love.. I'm sure that was a very hard choice back then.. but Heathcliffe did go and make his own money in the end and I think he would've done that anyway.. maybe Cathy was just selfish and greedy and thought she could have both?
Yes, I think money and prestige had a lot to do... Her explanations on why he accepted Edgar are childish just as it is to look for reinsurance. Maybe the flashes of living for a while in Thrushcross grange made her more aware of the social differences.
I think that is not only the money, but the social pressure, she didn't want to marry below and she believed that Edgar was the fitter choice. Nevertheless, Heathcliff left without talking to her, she was worried sick, even waited for him in the rain. I don't think she only cared about the money or choose one thing over other, but as impulsive as she was accepted Linton's propousal thinking she could later take it back. When she talks to Nelly you get a closer look at what she was going on at the time.
You are right that he was reliable to Cathy, but once he came back she couldn't undo her marriage. I don't how much of a choice she had after that or at the moment Heahcliff took off.
Anyway, i believe she is a little brat and has annoying features, but this is what I like about all these characters, they are easy to love and easier to hate. None is loving, devoted, they have raw human feelings. In a personal note, I don't think I could be friends with any of them, at least not with Cathy's and Heathcliff's generation
'extreme' and 'radical', esp the 'extreme part, is, in a nutshell, the personalities of both Catherine and Heathcliff. The often misunderstand each other, and instead of asking questions or talking things through, they both 'react', and not just a normal reaction, but an extreme one. Both Cathy and Heathcliff are INTENSE people.....
I'm sure we've all known couples like this. They love each other intensely...almost too intensely, and so it makes them crazy. They have horrible (intense) fights, but one cannot live or breathe without the other....they just don't know how to do that. That's why Catherine wants to die without Heathcliff; actually does die without him, and then Heathcliff is so distraught and angry with her that he lashed out at everyone around him, esp those that remind him of Catherine, such as little Cathy.....he doesn't know how to live or breathe without Catherine, and it is so extremely painful for him that he longs to join her, and in the end, he does. Then he and Catherine are together again, living wild, on their beloved Moors.
