Catherine I think you don't know what a Mary Sue is.

Greg Christ, what a GREAT point: it did feel like a "Catastrophe of the Minute Show." And I'm certain the author thought up all kinds of solutions first, like planting a radar miles away, having two rovers, etc. Voltaire's Candide has the same kind of "catastrophe of the moment" motif, but that's a satire, a comedy.

Chris Topher Catherine--A Mary Sue is an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character, a young or low-rank person who saves the day through unrealistic abilities. Often this character is recognized as an author insert or wish-fulfillment.

Chris Topher Catherine--It may be more helpful in explaining why I was wrong instead of telling me I am, because this definition--which I've seen defined only as this--fits this character perfectly
