I also believe in this reason as well, because the history of the two families is what kept them separated in the first place. I believe that if the two families were not rivals, then Romeo would be free to claim her for himself. The whole reason they kept their "love" for each other a secret was in fear of how the others would react.
I think it is very interesting that you think if the families didn't have a rivalry, Romeo and Juliet would be able to be together. I wonder if Juliet's family would want her to be with Romeo over Paris, since they were very fond of Paris and wanted her to marry him. I think there would still be a conflict surrounding Romeo and Juliet being together.
