Steven Mclennan Exactly, one of the main points of the book appears to be the fact that he's still just a kid. Kid's at this age think themselves adults, think themselves better and more grown up than than actually they are, and are therefore consistently hypocritical and exaggerated about the world and their role in it without even realising it.

Patricia You're right. He tries to overcome his descent into depression, which he doesn't understand or acknowledge, with his smart alec attitude - on the surface. I see him as a lonely, sad kid who is falling and there is no one there to catch him.

Terryn Mae Shock Is he depressed or a Hypochondriac? I think (Golly gee here are some spoilers!!!) In the end he is in the infirmary. Suicidal doesnt make sense to me, he is sick, i think.
