Very nicely put. I too think Terese's mother play a part in her attraction to Carol and subsequent clinginess. Highsmith though hasn't emphasized on the matter but has made clear referance to it, like you said with the 'tucking into bed' example.

Lately I've been thinking more about Carol. Why was she so into Terese from the start. I know you refered to Rindy but Terese is far older than Rindy. Remember when (SPOILERS AHEAD, people) Terese visited her house for the first time and Carol kissed her twice, I feel at that moment what Carol wanted was very physical.

God I wish I knew what Carol was thinking. I hope the film sheds some light over Carol's thought process.

And Carol is not going to be released in my country. I'll have to wait for a few months before I can lay my hand on a dvd or something. Its heart-breaking. The wait is slaying me left and right each day ;)

Iris I don't really like the "Mother/Daughter" thing everyone here keeps saying it was. You have to remember that Therese also falls asleep and is tucked in by her Co-worker when she goes to her house. I for one thought that that was because the older woman was also a lesbian, and the tucking into bed was the most sensual and physical that they could get without betraying their sexual predilections.
