Wow! I haven't thought of that! Especially on the thing that you mentioned about "he understands that striving for success inherently carries risk." and that Marlin could be a symbol of his excessive pride. I only thought that the old man is only being so selfconfident in order to be strong, and to not give up. He challenges, even though it is really harsh like you can know that he has sun burn and has cramps on his hand. Even though he fails to bring the big Marlin, we know that he'll not give up and try it the next time. By seeing his attitude, readers can know that no matter how much you fail, we can always try it again. The old man manages to catch the Marlin, but couldn't control the shark. However, he has made a progress to have caught a big Marlin. Next time he goes out to the sea, he can work on how to keep the fish, and reaches his goal.
