I have to say I disagree with you. Living peaceful first world modern lives does not mean we should be immune to the world's issues. As we grow older we realize the world is not as perfect and synchronized as it seems. Reading books like those helps promote exposure and get students thinking about issues and really observing the world around them. Developing a world view is an important part of life and books like these are very important to that.
