I hardly think a differing opinion could ruin a book.
You do realize Joe is from our culture, where the aim is to keep a child innocent and dependent as long as possible. Little wonder if kid doesn't meet the criteria that you set for him. This is a child who never had a wish to save the world and isn't even sur of which world to save.
I suggest you don't read anymore books from this series because Joe becomes even more unlikable with age.
Sorry , but I have not been in here in awhile but I loved all the Zero books and thought they were well written. Lets be fair they are books that are meant for escape or even just fun from every day life . They are fiction, so if you want some nonfiction stories , try and read the news paper but I wouldn't put much faith in that being true either. Some people need to learn to read and just enjoy it , relax and let go. The authors here don't make as much as you think , most of them do it because they enjoy it and their fans enjoy their work. So cut them some slack or let them know your secret when you write that book that pleases everyone and make your billions. This is for all of you people that nag about spelling and word usage and so on.Sorry but I'm done venting now.
ED,
It's a book , if you read it you would have seen that they gave them a food that made them mature a lot faster than normal . I'm not going to waste my time over a book that is not even true . If you want a argument I was in the military and saw some of the real things people can do to each other and yes, it is sick but these are books to be enjoyed by the readers . In combat you never know how you are going to act , you may sit on your couch and say I would do this or that but when your there it is totally different and it is not make believe . So no hard feelings . Just saying if you don't like the book don't read it. But you have to remember it's just a book.

Anyway,in regards to your comment, I do concede that you are right that Joe Dobbs wasn't always a coward. Furthermore, I read the book quiet awhile ago, so I might be wrong in some parts. However, I do know that on many occasions Joe Dobbs did show signs of cowardliness. He only seemed to show backbone around his alien mentor and his other dinosaur boss/friend? Whatever his name was. Also, when I said that he was a coward, I referred how when confronted by Sasha he back down and various times when dealing with aliens that weren't trying to save him.
You also mentioned that a child cannot save humanity alone. Yes alone, but an attempt can be made. Furthermore, I have seen many competent children. Also, in the colonial days children were successfully running whole ships and positions of power. In addition, with many cultures around the world, when an adolescents turns thirteen, they are considered mature adults.
However, if you really liked this book, I apologize if this ruined it for you.
