Characterization is very important in action and thriller novels. Take any Lee Child novel for an example. 'Simple' novels (especially in the fantasy genre) do not have this amount of characterization. I think what you meant was 'character-depth', which is integral for all good novels. All characters in The Ocean At The End Of The Lane seemed hollow to me from the inside. Your opinion can differ from mine. And I respect that. :)
