Melinda Brasher I agree, Sarah. I love stand-alone novels in sci fi and fantasy, but they're sometimes hard to find.

Susan I agree. Often if I find out a popular book is part of series, I'll pass it up. I don't want to have to commit to 3 or 4 or 5 books.

Leah Very true. That's why I only read Ender's Game as well, I liked how it ended.

Melinda Brasher I think some of it is pressure from the industry. I thought my novel, Far-Knowing, would be an easier sell because it was stand-alone YA fantasy, but many agents and publishers seem to be looking for series because successful ones are cash cows.
