Yeah, I know the feeling. I felt like he was trying TOO hard to be "realistic" and maybe some fantastical elements might have spiced it up.
A bit more character development would have spiced it up for me. The realism in this book is what made me read it. There is enough Sci-Fi out there that stretches our fantasy. Finally something that takes the physics of space litteral. For me the expanse books hit these three elements out of the park. It has great characters, takes the physics of space as they are and has great fantasy elements.
I found the Martian a great long weekend snack!
