Ghosts plus madness. The two things that scare me most in a story.
The Shining,hands down. I think this is one of the scariest King novels.
The movies (both) did it no justice, though the acting was excellent. There are just so many mind games being played in the book that I imagine are pretty difficult to translate onto film that never quite made it into the movie. The mind games that the ghosts play on Jack, for instance, make the story believable and completely chilling.
