One of the things I so loved was at the end gandoff said Your share was much greater. And Bilbo says It's more then I'll ever need and besides it's all my donkey can carry.
This implies that while he didn't ignore wealth and money it wasn't what drove him either. He really didn't care about the money he did it to say he did.
