Raven Bankston I truly agree with that>

bubblegumpopper I disagree with that. The book only covers one perspective, Jonas. It was always very limited in that regard and if you didn't take a step back and consider the overall environment and politics of the community, then you missed out on a large aspect of the story. The movie displays the world as a whole, and the fact that they already went through a botched Giver/Receiver setup not all that long ago makes it 100% make sense that the Chief Elder would both be watching Jonas carefully and be concerned when he started to display dissatisfaction with the way that the community is set up. And yes, the Giver's home was off limits to surveillance from other Elders, but Jonas doesn't spend all his time there. When he starts questioning and seeing colours and making subtle suggestions to his sister and behaviours around Gabe, those are all under surveillance.

Obviously the movie can't be a complete copy of the book because sometimes what works on paper falls flat on film, but the movie did not go outlandishly crazy with changes and the overall mood and themes of the book is preserved.
