That's not really the book or authors fault. People misquote the Bible all the time. Defend it with a passion and label all who disagree as sinners or heathens. I liked Twilight too. Want to tell me how vampires don't sparkle?
Sadly, the people you refered to probably do the same with the Bible right after stabbing their own brother in the back.
I also don't think reality is simple. But you did the same or worse by assuming anyone who defends this book is just looking for a convenient excuse to hurt others with their greed.
Kristin, your post sums up perfectly why I like to read Rand. She's not all I read, and her points are not 100% correct, but she can present a refreshing view of society. Her worldview can be simplistic, but, hey, it's fiction. It isn't a creed or a law. It's a set of thoughts that can be tumbled around and re-thought by the reader.
I agree, very well said! You captured the "heart" of the writing simply and eloquently. I also don't see this novel as sided with one political party or another but being more a commentary about the heart of man... willing or unwilling... Jerry Springer or not Jerry Springer, so to speak.
Furthermore, I have lived in Europe (including England) for 11 years of my life and I know many many Europeans who love these books. And many many English people who are derogatory, rude and resentful of Americans. I am not being reactionary but the very idea of analyzing a countries literary tastes and wanting to compare it another's reeks of racism. When Europeans tell me point blank to my face, "I don't like Americans." (Happens once a week) I tell them, "Hitler didn't like Jews." :)

But A lot of people defend this book with the mindset that it allows them to avoid responsibility for the hurt they do others while achieving personal wealth.
