It could have been Allison and someone else, maybe Danny, or Pem. It could have been a play accident and they were too afraid to tell, just like Harriet was at the end of the book.
also, theres a character mentioned wearing a stetson is another part of the book
I'm pretty sure it's Farish as the other man is described as having silver rings like Danny
And Robin is not "the little friend". As is made clear in the final chapter, "little friend" refers to DANNY.
It does suggest though that Alison knew more than she let on, or that she had memories she repressed. If it was Pem and Danny (as suggested above, maybe that Danny freaked and took off) it would explain why she had something nagging at her later on, especially in the light of her relationship with Pem. And there was a strong storyline about Pem and Hely having no consequences for their actions at home, no matter what they did.
