One Flew The start of Hunchback is very convluted, there is about a 100-150 page preamble that has almost no bearing on the rest of the book. Once you get into it Hugo's signature style and interweaving of plots and characters stars to come out again. It's a shame really because it is good book, if you can make it through the bad start.

Amanda Alexandre Tip: skip chapters 3 or 4. If you have a "full edition", these chapters only describe how Paris was at those times. It doesn't add to the book. I skipped these chapters (because there was an editor's note explaining what those chapters were about), and I didn't fail to understand anything because of it.

Rachael Dewhurst Mmmmm, to be honest the more reviews and comparisons I read the less I think I'm going to enjoy it which is a real shame. Oh well, maybe sometime in the future or if i see it in the library. Thanks for everyones contribution and I hope it continues I really enjoy reading peoples thoughts and interpretations and Les Miserbales has become such an important book to me. :)
