John Stewart, Duke of Albany
John Stewart (1481 or 1484 - 1536) was Scotland's second Duke of Albany and Count of Auvergne and Lauraguais in France. He was the son of Alexander Stewart, the brother of James III, and served as Regent of Scotland during the minority of James V.
In 1517 Albany renewed the Auld Alliance with France and secured the promise of a French bride for the five year old King of Scots under the Treaty of Rouen. He also secured papal confirmation of Scotland's ancient rights and privileges from Pope Leo X.…more
