Sir Walter Scott
Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832), was a Scottish historical novelist, poet, playwright, and historian. Many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and Scottish literature. Famous titles include the novels Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Waverley, Old Mortality, The Heart of Mid-Lothian and The Bride of Lammermoor, and the narrative poems The Lady of the Lake and Marmion.
Although mainly remembered for his extensive literary works and political engagement, Scott was an advocate, judge and legal administrator by profession. Throughout his career he combined his writing and editing work with his daily work as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire. He was prominent in the Tory establishment in Edinburgh, an active member of the Highland Society, for a long term president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1820 - 1832) and a vice president of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (1827 - 1829).
