Charteris, a prefect in Merevale's house at St Austin's, is founder, editor, and publisher of the Glowworm, an unofficial and highly personal paper a great deal more in demand than the Austinian in The Pothunters, The Babe and the Dragon (where he bowls for the School-house), The Manoeuvres of Charteris, and Pillingshot's Paper. In The Manoeuvres of Charteris he is in the sixth form, plays half on the School 15, and is out to break school rules. Called the Alderman because he is inclined to stoutness. Loquacious, plays the banjo, a poor student; shares a study with Welch.
