[close] Nichole Wright is a character in Michelle Butler Hallett’s novels Sky Waves and deluded your sailors. In Sky Waves, she is also one of the narrators. Lapsed Protestant (some relatives belong to the Church of Prevenient Grace at the End of Things) whose parents sent her to a private Catholic school merely because it was private. Depressive and bulimic. Brown hair, green eyes. Born 1971 in St. John’s, Nichole is related to the VOIC Radio Wrights and keenly feels the weight of family history and family expectations. In Sky Waves, she is one of several voices trying to communicate, trying to speak of something dire while feeling gagged by shame and the perceived need to be well behaved. Misdiagnosed as bipolar in 2005 and inappropriately medicated, Nichole struggles throughout Sky Waves and deluded your sailors to acknowledge her childhood sexual abuse and learning to empathize with suffering on others. In deluded your sailors, she’s commissioned to research and write a play for heavily-funded tourism initiative but soon encounters more obstacles than she ever expected, including truth.
