Known as Harvey Kent in Golden Age stories. Kent brings the Batman to testify that "Boss" Moroni killed "Bookie" Benson. Kent demonstrates proof with Moroni's luck double-headed silver dollar. Moroni then throws a concentrated solution of vitriol at Kent's face, distorting it and discoloring his suit. His only hope for plastic surgery seems to be with a European specialist named Dr. Eckart, whom the Nazis have put into a concentration camp. His fiancée, a sculptress named Gilda, rejects him on seeing his face looking like a monster. He then takes Moroni's lucky silver dollar, defaces one side, and uses it to decide whether each day's actions will be good or evil. He even divides his office quarters into a good side and an evil side.
