John Usher
John Palmer Usher (January 9, 1816 – April 13, 1889) was elected Indiana Attorney General in 1861 but was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Interior by President Abraham Lincoln only a few monmths later. He became Secretary of the Interior in 1863 upon the resignation of Caleb Smith from the position. Usher resigned as Secretary of the Interior in 1865.
