Barbara Grigor
Barbara Grigor, nee Sternschein, (1944 - 1994) was a film-maker, theatre producer and arts entrepreneur. She was the daughter of Rudi and Leni Sternschein, Jewish refugees from Austria.
With Murray Grigor, whom Barbara married in 1968, and Lynda Myles, she transformed the Edinburgh Film Festival into a radical carnival of new ideas about film which set fashions throughout Europe. As a partner with Murray in the film company Viz, Barbara learned skills of organisation, the marshalling of support and money, which complemented Murray's torrent of ideas.
In 1981, Barbara and Murray Grigor mounted the influential Scotch Myths exhibition which explored popular representations of Scottishness.
Barbara Grigor's interest in sculpture led to the first big retrospective exhibition by their friend Eduardo Paolozzi at the 1984 Edinburgh Festival and to a pioneering film which revived the achievements of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
