For me, the job of writing a novel can be split into three distinct tasks: thinking, writing and editing and the secret to getting that novel down onto paper is to be clear about which task you are working on and to never deviate. If you wait until it's time to write before you decide what is going to happen next in your story you will stare at a blank screen for an hour and write nothing, likewise, if you start worrying about making your writing perfect then you will also be in danger of getting no words down.(less)
