My copy of the book starts mid-sentence. Is it normal or does my copy have a printing mishap?

I was put off by the violence to animals in "American Psycho" and was wondering if there is any in this book? I KNOW, I know – I should be much more alarmed about the violence to humans! But it's just such a weird, visceral, triggering thing for me, that I really have to avoid it or suffer nightmares for weeks. Any guidance would be appreciated.
