Aislinn Yes. Lord Brocktree is the first book chronologically, and takes place before Redwall Abbey is built.

Some of the cameo reference/appearances are more interesting though if you read the books chronologically (or revisit earlier reads as you progress through the series). (less)

If we were to make a recommendation it would be in the published order. You can always revisit the books after fleshing out the history to appreciate cameos differently but the minor reveals are kind of lost if you read them chronologically.(less)
