I have moments of ah yes I know the reference having watched a lot of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Pushkin among others, I mainly watch movies or listen to audiobooks, I try to find early Russian movies, not English ones. Russian movies are true to the books English ones are very loose on being faithful and often just plain wrong. Watch the Russian Ekaterina and then an English Catherine the great and it is like two totally different stories.I personally find some English versions offensive and biased. Sometimes English translated books lose meaning,
However, to answer your question I think you would be safe reading this and then as you work through the references it will be more an 'ah moment' 'I remember this I can not see it spoiling your reading of referenced works (less)
