Pepper is rather shallow and sometimes TSTL, though; I enjoyed the first few books enough, but got tired of the character being so dumb.

If you'd like a spooky series with less (or no) romance, check out the "Jensen Murphy, Ghost for Hire" series by Chris Marie Green. The main character is a ghost who is trying to find her killer. Sadly, only three books have been published so far and we still don't know who killed her or why, and I haven't seen any more plans from the author to continue the series.(less)
