Maybe you can pick up this new, cleaner version. For example, the birthing-process is reduced to medical language and is less graphically descriptive than the version given in the introduction, which quotes from the earlier translation. Personally, I did not start reading Zola until I was past 30 and I would have found him difficult to understand when I was a teenager. In a way, I feel Zola, Balzac and Stendhal are for adults, while Alexander Dumas, Gustav Flaubert and Victor Hugo are for teenagers. My personal philosophy is not to push children too much, it paid off in the end for me, in my opinion. Good luck!(less)
