Did I miss a book somewhere? The book is talking about Alvin meeting Jim Bowie, about freeing slaves and losing his first child, but none of this happened in Heartfire. Is there supposed to be a book between Heartfire and The Crystal City?

The events you mention are described in "The Yazoo Queen" which is set immediately before The Crystal City.
