Is watching the movie a substitute for reading it? I just start reading first 10 pages and decided to watch a movie. After watching it, I really can feel how interesting/exotic life at that time. in that region in China was, also how terrific the extreme of the movie reveals (sex, killing, man vs woman). I am a bit scared that reading leaves too much of an negative feeling on me. Any opinions?

As Mary C noted, few movies can substitute for a good book, and this happens to be a great one. In the case of this one, the first two chapters are represented in the movie fairly well. Not to disparage the movie at all, as it's very good in its own right. But, as Giona noted, if you like the movie, you'll like the book. (less)
