I loved these books growing up and want to read them to my older students during story time in the library. Unfortunately I have been made aware that one of our teachers has an issue with these books due to "political incorrectness". Advice, ideas? I still want to read them to the students.

If that's the case, I recommend still reading the books but talking about the racism and making sure the students know it's not okay. Just because we ignore something doesn't mean it didn't happen, and we can't ignore that part of history. I would also recommend reading Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park instead; it was written by a Korean-American woman who loved the Little House books as a kid but now has a hard time accepting the racism. She wrote Prairie Lotus as a kind of alternative Little House book about a Chinese American instead of Euro-American girl. It is not in any way just a rip-off of Little House in the Big Woods, however; it is its own story. I really enjoy it and it is one of my favorite middle grade books. (less)
