If that's the case, I recommend still reading the books but talking about the racism and making sure the students know it's not okay. Just because we ignore something doesn't mean it didn't happen, and we can't ignore that part of history. I would also recommend reading Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park instead; it was written by a Korean-American woman who loved the Little House books as a kid but now has a hard time accepting the racism. She wrote Prairie Lotus as a kind of alternative Little House book about a Chinese American instead of Euro-American girl. It is not in any way just a rip-off of Little House in the Big Woods, however; it is its own story. I really enjoy it and it is one of my favorite middle grade books. (less)

The reading level and content matures slightly with each book in the series as the family ages.

Sometimes it's fun to read a kid's book...or to read it aloud to a kid. :) (less)
