My son likes the first book very much. Can he skip this one and go on to the 3rd book in the series? This 2nd book seems to be geared towards girls (it even has pink cover) and I am afraid it might turn him away from the series which he might otherwise enjoy. In other words, can he still follow the flow of events without reading the 2nd book?

That said, I first read this book as an eight-year-old boy, who was very much into typical boy things, and loved it. This book can certainly be overlooked without affecting the continuity of the stories, as they generally stand on their own, but I think it would be a shame to disregard it as it is not only a good children's book, but it's also an effective way to allow boys to see that the sex of a protagonist should not determine one's eligibility to enjoy it.(less)
