It's really tragic story at the start, but has a heart-warming ending.

Many of the Mooming characters feature aspects of Tove herself. Hemulens are supposedly one dimension of Tove. This is what they say about Hemulens at the Moomin-website:

"Hemulens tend to have obsessive personalities, devoting themselves solidly to one interest whether it be skiing, stamp-collecting, butterflies, or whatever. Once they collect all the stamps, they move to other subject.

Hemulens tend also to be oblivious to the feelings and opinions of others. Other characters frequently find the Hemulens annoying or overwhelming as they can be loud, bossy, abrasive, and insensitive. However, they are well-intentioned".

This is how Tove saw one aspect of herself: sometimes self-absorbed in her art. (less)
