Antigone represents a figure of profound ethical and moral resistance, defying Creon's laws to follow those she believes to be superior, the laws of the gods, to honor her deceased brother. Hers is a revolutionary freedom of the Self, which stands in opposition to the reason of state or the law of the State that can never coincide with the individual's subversive desire.
All this, along with her rebellion against social conventions and her tragic end, makes Antigone not only a central character in her tragedy but also a lasting symbol of the fight for justice and moral integrity.(less)

It would help to read a synopsis of what happens in the first two to get a general idea of the politics and controversy that takes place in Antigone. I recommend the synopsis in Timeless Tales Of Gods and Heroes by Edith Hamilton.(less)
