I think that in practise, like several other diagnoses in the Big Green Book, it seems to be used as a catchall term to placate insurance companies; meaning, neither the therapist nor the client know what's wrong and would like insurance to pay for sessions so they can work together to find out. So I wouldn't doubt that a great number of so-called "borderline" diagnoses are actually misdiagnosed autism or some other neurological difference.
