Finding a new fantasy book with fresh and interesting characters who engage so well with each other is rare. Engaging dialogue and character evolution fills a vacuum much needed in fantasy.
I was delighted when I found this book and gorged on as much of the series I could find at the time.
I found the book light and encouraging. (less)

But teens could read it too I guess.. I mean, when I was 13 y.o. I read books like LotR, The Chronicles of Amber, Dragonlance.. and they're also totally enjoyable for adults.. Let's say : it's not written specifically for teens/YA)
The protagonists are rather "young" but in a fantasy world where, well, at 16 you're an adult and goes to war, you know... (and the other guy is in fact quite old, he just looks like he's young, quite like an elve would be)

It's also not at all a teenage LGBTQI+ romance book, it's a fantasy saga, with political intrigues, spies, wars...where the characters happen to be in a gay relationship. It's just there but doesn't take AT ALL the major part of the plot. Besides, it only develop in the end of the second book.

If you like fantasy and smart political with very well written characters who happen to be bi, then.. there's a good chance you'll like it :) (less)

The main romance doesn't even really begin in earnest until book 2; and while some of the later books focus a lot more on the romantic relationship between the two main characters, the plot always takes precedence over any of the romances. I personally always thought this series does a great job of balancing out the interpersonal relationships with a the larger overarching plot. Your mileage may vary, but I wouldn't say this series could be defined by its romance alone. (less)
