Frank says something like "I bet the doctor said your back would get better if you stopped drinking" at one point when talking about it with his father, and the latter neither confirms nor denies it. Nothing seems to indicate that Shay tried to follow through with the plan once Frank left (something incomprehensible to me). (less)

If that was a red herring, I totally fell for it. During the entire Big Scene with Frank and Shay, I read along expecting Shay to tell Frank that Rosie was their half-sister. When that didn't happen, I still expected the author to give us a private flash-back of some kind to show us it was true and was the real reason Shay (or the father) tried to break up Frank and Rosie. Gaaah!(less)

He began the series back in the 1950's so some of the early books are very period, noir-ish which I think is fun. He wrote them up to this death in 2005 so they become more modern. We follow the same precinct and detectives and, sometimes, the same criminals too. There are over 50 novels in the series but the early ones are really short. I haven't read them all but really enjoyed the ones I did read.(less)

Frank's the only one who sees it for what it is, and knows how to protect himself from it. You can't change your family, but you can protect yourself and your child from it. My father-in-law was a nasty violent alcoholic. Maybe you don't have experience in that and the craziness it brings.(less)
