I believe it was set around the mid 90s as it definitely took place after Botswana gained independence (1966) and after the death of Seretse Khama (1980) as he was mentioned a few times as a revered former political figure. With a beauty pageant being a key feature of the story, and with Miss Botswana winning the Miss Universe title in 1999, I would have this thought this would have been mentioned if it was set after this happened.(less)
