The love scenes are only intended to describe the genuine affection between the two, despite unsurmountable differences. Her alien form becomes important later, and I suggest you keep reading. The "weird" only sets the stage for the humanity that exists within it. I had trouble starting too, but with some perseverance, the story is an excellent read.
